Nassau insurance, a must for you and your family
There are over 80 insurance companies in The Bahamas with assets approaching $700 million. The 760+ Funds have assets under management totaling in excess of $200 billion. Overall, The Bahamas offers a full range of financial services and products, including: asset management and protection; commercial banking, brokerage services, company formation & administration; information technology services; insurance & support services; investment management; fund administration; private banking; maritime registry & support services; support services (back office); and trust services. The Bahamas provides a tax neutral environment for international business. There is no direct taxation, i.e. on capital gains, corporate earnings, personal income, sales, inheritance or dividends. The Bahamian insurance industry is divided into two sectors: (I) the domestic market (the insurance of local risks by locally-owned or foreign-owned insurers) and (II) the international (captive) market (the insurance of foreign risks by foreign-owned insurers working through the Bahamas). The domestic market is relatively large and supported by seven locally-owned and forty-nine foreign-owned insurers. Business is written directly or through a variety of brokers and agents. Life insurance is dominated by subsidiaries of Canadian and US companies, which account for about 78% of the market. Bahamian-owned companies account for 20%, with UK companies accounting for the remaining 2%. Property insurance is provided predominantly by British companies. The water sports and scooter rental industries in the Bahamas are not carefully regulated. Visitors should rent equipment only from reputable operators, and should insist on sufficient training before using the equipment. Every year people are killed or injured by the improper use of scooters, jet-skis, and personal watercraft or by the careless or reckless operation of such equipment by others. You should insist on seeing proof that operators have sufficient medical and liability insurance. Travelers should also invest in low-cost traveler’s insurance that includes medical evacuations, as most American insurance companies do not cover this. High quality medical care is generally available, but expensive, in Nassau and Freeport. Medical care is limited outside of Nassau and Freeport. Bahamian doctors and hospitals do not usually accept U.S. medical insurance policies and typically expect immediate cash payment for professional services. It is the patient's responsibility to seek reimbursement later from their insurance companies. Serious health problems requiring hospitalization and/or medical evacuation to the United States can cost thousands of dollars. Persons with serious or life-threatening conditions who wish to return to U.S. medical facilities for treatment normally must be airlifted. There is a chronic shortage of blood at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, where most emergency surgery is performed. Travelers with rare blood types should know the names and locations of possible blood donors should the need arise.
