Nassau snorkeling advices
Nassau Bahamas snorkeling is one of the favorite tourist activities on a Nassau Bahamas holiday. Whether it's off the boat or right off the beach, Nassau Bahamas snorkeling is a perfect way to experience the beauty of the underwater world.
If you’ve never experienced snorkeling before, don't worry. Equipment and instruction can be found at almost any hotel.
If you plan to snorkel off the beach, having your own equipment is a big plus: many of the best Nassau Bahamas snorkeling areas are isolated, far from places where you can rent gear. If you can float and you like to have fun, you'll love Nassau Bahamas snorkeling. |

Nassau snorkeling - fun and relax for you and your family
Nassau is a very popular cruise ship destination and vacation spot. Like most tourist spots in the Bahamas and the Caribbean as a whole, one of the most popular activities is snorkeling. While there is one beach reasonably close to downtown Nassau, most of the hotels, and the cruise ship dock, snorkelers generally have to take some sort of tour or excursion involving boat transportation away from Nassau to snorkel. If you're stopping in Nassau on a cruise, you may only have 6-8 hours in port. If it's your first stop after leaving the United States some of that time may be further whittled away by immigration control. A long snorkeling tour may mean you never even see Nassau, let alone do anything else of interest there. Blue Lagoon Island Bahamas is warm little island located about 30 minutes from Paradise Island and Nassau Island. At Blue Lagoon Island Bahamas, tourists can participate in a number of interactive programs. Activities include Blue Lagoon dolphin encounters and the popular Stingray City Bahamas, where children and adults can swim with stingrays and other marine life. Even if you're spending a few days in Nassau, there may be 3-4 hour snorkeling tours scheduled in such a way that they preclude doing anything else that day. This may or may not be acceptable to you. Different tours spend different amounts of time traveling to the snorkeling spot and different tours may incorporate other activities that take some time. Snorkeling tours that include an island tour may take a more roundabout path to their final destination than tours that are just about the snorkeling. Some tours add beach time or lunch. Some use slower boats than others. Some of the tour destinations are farther from Nassau than others. Each snorkeling venue is different. Some are just a patch of water near a reef or other interesting underwater feature. Some of the more popular snorkeling destinations for excursions leaving from Nassau include Rainbow Reef, Blue Lagoon Island (home to Stingray City as well as other snorkeling venues), Blackbeard's Cay, Pearl Island, and Rose Island Reef. Not all of these venues are available from every cruise line or on every ship but there are unaffiliated tours to each on a regular basis. Rainbow Reef and Blue Lagoon Island are about 45 minutes from Nassau (if you take a catamaran or other high speed boat) although Blue Lagoon Island feels farther away for some reason. Rainbow Reef is strictly a "drop anchor and plunge into the water" stop but Blue Lagoon Island is full of multiple sections each devoted to different activities such as beach sports, family beach fun, swimming, snorkeling with sting rays (Stingray City), and dolphin encounters. It even has a souvenir stand. Blackbeard's Cay and Pearl Island are significantly closer than the two spots I've visited - perhaps 25 minutes away at a more leisurely speed. Different tour companies are more or less involved with shaping your experience; pick one that fits your preferences. Many tour companies are now requiring folks to wear inflatable life vests in order to go in the water. Most will allow you to deflate them and dive, but some of the companies want you to keep them inflated while you're on the surface. Companies may have other restrictions or rules, such as first time snorkelers who are required to wear additional non-deflatable flotation devices on their arms regardless of their swimming skills. You should ask about any rules imposed by the tour company and make sure you can live with them before committing to a particular tour.
